An often deferred auto repair is timing belt replacement. While most people are aware of the importance of regular oil changes for engine health — and get those changes done regularly — replacing a timing belt is often postponed due to its expense.
It’s true that timing belt replacement is not cheap. Although costs vary significantly based on vehicle make and model, it tends to be a pricey maintenance procedure that is sometimes deferred as a result. However, what many people do not realize is that failing to replace the timing belt at the vehicle’s recommended intervals can potentially lead to serious engine damage.
What is a Timing Belt?
The timing belt serves as the coordinating mechanism between the valves in the upper part of the motor and the pistons at the bottom of the engine. Many of today’s newer engines — often referred to as ‘interference engines’ — are designed with very close tolerances. In many cases, the distance between the valves and pistons are fractions of an inch from each other.
Because the timing belt is made up of flexible, fabric plys coated with rubber composite, they become brittle over time, which can cause the belt to break. When a break occurs, the valves and pistons can come into contact with one another, causing serious damage to these components — and resulting in very expensive repairs.
In worst case scenarios, the cost of the repair may exceed the value of the vehicle. Whatever the cost, it is FAR less expensive to replace a timing belt than to repair a damaged engine as the result of a timing belt that breaks.
Most manufacturers recommend replacing the timing belt every 50,000 to 60,000 miles. See your owner’s manual to learn the timing belt replacement interval recommended for your vehicle.
